Fanning Hate Against Muslims

August 24, 2010

My heart hurts a great deal when I read this. This is what I mean by starting a “meme,” to use Alfred Webre’s term.  Soon sloganeering, blame, demagoguery will no longer work. It couldn’t come too soon for me – and I’m sure you.

How a Lunatic, Racist Blogger Is Fanning Hate Against Muslims — With the Help of Our Dumb Media

Anti-Islam groups created by extremists like Pamela Geller are on a crusade against U.S. Muslims.

Pamela Geller, the once-obscure right-wing blogger known for peddling hateful, wildly over-the-top rhetoric (she once claimed that Barack Obama was the bastard stepchild of Malcom X) and for pulling stunts like taping a harangue against Muslims while clad in a bikini, has parlayed the anti-mosque hysteria sweeping across America into mainstream media attention just in time to promote her new book, The Post-American Presidency.

Geller and co-author Robert Spencer have been relentlessly promoting the “nontroversy” over the Park 51 project. According to a profile in the Guardian, the pair have “been at the forefront of drumming up opposition to the center, two blocks from Ground Zero, through an array” of organizations like the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) and Stop Islamisation of America (SIOA). The groups “have become increasingly influential as conservative politicians exploit anti-Muslim sentiment before November’s congressional and state elections.”

The groups’ ideology is reminiscent of the reckless demagoguery of Joe McCarthy. According to the Guardian, AFDI “says it is fighting ‘specific Islamic supremacist initiatives in American cities’ and hunting down ‘infiltrators of our federal agencies’.” SIOA, which bills itself as a human rights organization “is tied to a similar group, Stop Islamisation of Europe, which goes by the motto: ‘Racism is the lowest form of human stupidity, but Islamophobia is the height of common sense.’”

The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg calls Geller a “lunatic racist,” and laments the “very depressing” fact that despite being “a marginal nutbag… it seems as if she’s setting the national agenda now on matters related to Islam and religious freedom.” Spencer previously penned several books advancing dark conspiracy theories about Islam, including Stealth Jihad: How Radical Islam is Subverting America without Guns or Bombs. He’s also the proprietor of Jihad Watch, a wingnut Web site that helped raise thousands of dollars to pay for a controversial ad campaign smearing the Park 51 project on New York City buses.

According to the Guardian, Geller’s blog, Atlas Shrugs, “lays bare her sympathies with extremist groups across the globe.” Geller “vigorously defended Slobodan Milosevic” when he was tried for war crimes at the Hague, denying that the Serbs committed atrocities during the 1990s. She has “allied herself with racist extremists in South Africa in promoting a claim that the black population is carrying out a ‘genocide’ of whites,” and says that she “shares the goals” of the far-right English Defense League (EDL). “We need to encourage rational, reasonable groups [like the EDL] that oppose the Islamisation of the West,” she wrote. Geller has also embraced Geert Wilders, the far-right Dutch politician who advocates banning the Qu’ran.

The debacle surrounding the proposed “Ground Zero Mosque” is founded in Islamaphobia and nothing more. If the people who flew the planes into the Twin Towers were Christian zealots who wanted to punish America for becoming too secular, or Jewish individuls who were angry because America wasn’t supporting Israel’s West Bank occupation by sending US troops, or some such silly matter, no one would protest a church or synagogue being built where the mosque is being proposed today.

If someone did protest a synagogue in the location members of the Jewish community would rightfully take to the streets in protest, wearing a yellow Star of David and saying: “We never thought we would see this day again. Didn’t we learn our lessons from 1930s Germany?” And no one would be in any doubt that it was founded in anti-Jewish sentiment. Likewise, this is anti-Islamic sentiment.

I can feel sympathy for a woman who was raped, as another example, but if she asked her landlord to not lease any apartments on her floor to a man of the same color as her rapist because it was being insensitive to her, there would be no doubt she was engaging in bigotry and seeking to penalize an entire group based on her one attacker.

Furthermore, the attacks were prompted by America’s dominance in the world: economic and military. The Twin Towers–the country’s financial capital in Manhattan–and the Pentagon symbolized that oppression and dominance. Yet, all of the big financial insititutions are still located inManhattan, not far from “ground zero”, as well as Wall Street where the big corporations (that buy up and usurp the world’s resources under the noses of the communities who depend on them) trade their stock. And how many military recruitment offices are located nearby–a military which is engaged in two occupation in the Middle East, which further aggravates anti-Western sentiment and increasing tension?

The tension over the “Ground Zero moaque” is anti-Islam sentiment and bigotry. Apparently there is a lot of that, as pointed out, in the world today

With loving thoughts to you, Jason, just FYI, the people who blew the planes out of the sky were not Muslims. In fact no hijackers were aboard any of the planes.

The people who did it were a cabal consisting of the leading members of the Bush administration, leading figures in the alphabet agencies (FBI, CIA, etc.), leading figures in NORAD, the Navy, and other military services, some bankers, business leaders, some generals in the the Pakistani ISI, MOSSAD, etc.

For more information on this, just enter “9/11” in the search box on the top righthand side of the blogsite or skim down the list of pages on the righthand side.

Islamophobia is based on a lie. The cabal is getting away with murder.

      Namaste,

      Steve

This dismays me. Have these people (who oppose ALL Muslims) graduated from Kindergarten yet? It’s one thing to oppose certain unsavoury/unacceptable BEHAVIOURS in people, but to black-list a whole (religious) segment of society is a step backwards, IMHO.

It looks to me like these actions are nothing more than revenge and arrogance…therefore, it will have a negative outcome, because that’s how the energy of “arrogant-revenge” operates. Nothing good ever comes out of it.

Isn’t there enough intolerance in the world? I suppose taking an attitude of forgiveness is too “archaic” for these hysterical types?
