The Aztec Dark Rift

June 25, 2010

Geoff S. (I don’t publish readers’ last names on my site lest I unwittingly give them unwanted publicity – and more raised eyebrows!) has made some excellent comments on the article “John Ennis: Hunab Ku – The Galactic Butterfly.” (1)

His points are most welcome and should help us understand the subject more fully.

It seems best to leave the article up, with his comment attached, so that you have something to compare Geoff’s comments to. But it also makes sense to post the articles that he mentions.

So here’s Geoff’s points about “Hunab Ku” and  the Aztec”Black Road to the Underworld.” The articles will follow. Thank you, Geoff, for elucidating the subject.

There are several inaccuracies in the above piece, that should be considered. This symbol was NOT known to the Maya as the ‘Galactic Butterfly” – they had no word for the galaxy, but saw the Dark Rift as Xibalba Be – the black road to the underworld. For the true origins of the symbol, see this short investigation:

http://www.diagnosis2012.co.uk/new10.htm#hunab

You will see that the symbol was originally rectangular, and was not even Mayan, but Aztec, appearing in the Aztec Codex Magliabecchiano. It originally had no association with the god Hunab Ku (who is thought to be a Yucataec version of One Hunahpu (Q’iche solar deity of the Popol Vuh myth) and no association with the galactic centre. The above article demonstrates where these associations came from….it was a cloak design for an Aztec Festival of Lip Plugs.

The symbol as modified by Jose Arguelles has come to represent The Galactic Centre, including its representation in the Diagnosis2012 site logo, but a more accurate Maya symbol would have been the mouth of the serpent, Jagur Toad, or Crocodile/Caiman. Just so you know…

Secondly, the statement in paragraph 7: “The ancient Mayan astronomers accurately predicted, over 1500 years ago, the exact alignment of the Earth, the Sun, the star cluster Pleiades with the center of our galaxy that will take place at the end of the present long cycle during the coming Gregorian year of 2012.” This is very confused…. there are 2 separate alignments rolled into one here.

The Pleiades constellation is on the opposite side of the sky from the centre of the galaxy, in the shoulder of the t\Taurus constellation, and there is no way that an entire constellation could shift position by 180 degrees to line up with the center of the galaxy, or galactic equator, in the Sagittarius constellation.

This is like saying Taurus will align with Sagittarius! The confusion is between Galactic Alignment – the alignment of the Winter Solstice Sun and Galactic Equator, as seen from Earth (December 21st 2012);

and the alignment of the zenith Sun with the Pleiades over Chichen Itza, 60 days after the spring Equinox, which is flagged by the shadow play on the Pyramid of Kukulcan. This combines with a solar eclipse in 2012 on May 20th:
